The Collegium Orientale (abbreviated COr) in Eichstätt is a Catholic college that serves the training of candidates for priesthood and the postgraduate study of clergy from different Eastern Churches . It is the only seminary in the world that is aimed at all Eastern Catholic Churches as well as the Oriental and Orthodox Churches. The opportunity to study for married candidates for priesthood and clergy is also a specialty of the COr.

history

The college was established with effect from September 1, 1998 by the then Bishop of Eichstätt , Walter Mixa . It is an independent institution of the Eichstätt diocese and reports to the local bishop.

Essence and task

The college is located next to the Episcopal Seminary Collegium Willibaldinum and accommodates 39 students from the Greek Catholic Church of Ukraine ( Ukrainian Catholic Church ), Slovakia , Poland and Hungary , as well as the Melkite Greek Catholic Church , the Maronite Church , the Syro- Malabar and Syro-Malankar Churches of India . In addition to the Catholic students, candidates for the priesthood of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate , the Georgian Orthodox Apostle Church and the Armenian Apostolic Church also study . The dual community of Collegium Orientale and Collegium Willibaldinum is currently by far the largest diocesan seminary in Germany with regard to the household community.
Life in the Collegium Orientale is shaped by the spiritual typicon and by studying Catholic theology with a focus on Eastern Churches at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt .

The COr has an ecumenical goal with regard to the uniate Eastern Churches and should in particular enable the cultivation of Byzantine spirituality and liturgy . The company's own journal ContaCOr , which appears twice a year, provides information about the activities of the Collegium Orientale, about the theses of the college students and contains articles on theology and spirituality of the Eastern Church.

liturgy

The divine services ( divine liturgy , Vespers , Compline ) are mainly celebrated in the Byzantine rite . In addition to the house chapel of the Byzantine rite, there is a Syrian and a Coptic chapel in the Collegium . When priests of the Syrian or Coptic church tradition study in the COr, the services in these rites are celebrated here. Foreign believers also come to the services, which are mainly held in German because of the different nationalities of the seminarians.

management

The German diocesan priest and archimandrite Andreas Thiermeyer , who was a monk in the Niederaltaich monastery and is thus at home in the Eastern Church spirituality, was in charge until 2008 . The first spiritual was Fr. Martiriji Dmitri Bagin, a former Russian Orthodox cleric who converted to the Catholic Church years ago; Michal Leščišin and Maxentius Krah OFM followed him. After Thiermeyer was appointed rector of the pilgrimage church Maria, Heil der Kranken auf dem Habsberg , Msgr. Paul Schmidt became rector of the college. He was followed in 2014 by the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Archpriest Oleksandr Petrynko, who was assisted by the former abbot of the Geras Premonstratensian Monastery and Archimandrite Michael Proházka and the deacon Mykola Dobra as vice rectors and the Ukrainian priest Ivan Kachala as spiritual.
