Michael Karl Proházka

Michael Karl Proházka (born July 29, 1956 in Vienna ) is a Premonstratensian canon , vice rector of the Collegium Orientale in Eichstätt and was the 57th abbot of the Lower Austrian Abbey of Geras from 2007 to 2018 .

Life

Michael Proházka was born in Vienna on July 29, 1956. He studied philosophy and theology in Vienna, Freiburg and Rome and finished his studies with the work Critique of Freedom and Concept of Freedom in the Structure of the Will to Power to Friedrich Nietzsche . In 1979 he entered the Premonstratensian Canons of Geras , where he received the religious name Karl and was ordained a priest in 1983 . After working in parishes of the monastery, as dean of the Geras deanery and as novice master, Proházka took over the duties of vice-rector at the Collegium Orientale in Eichstätt , an ecumenically oriented seminary for students from Eastern churches united with Rome . In 2005 Proházka was recalled to Geras and appointed prior by Administrator Abbot Martin Felhofer ( Schlägl Abbey ) .

On September 24, 2007 Proházka was elected 57th abbot of the Geras Abbey and on December 2, 2007, Bishop Klaus Küng of St. Pölten appointed him. On July 7, 2012, Patriarch Gregory III raised him . Laham to the Archimandrite .

Under Proházka, a Byzantine chapel was set up in the Geras Abbey and the newly founded Itinga was raised to a canony . After the unrest in the Geras Abbey in recent years (see: Joachim Angerer ), consolidating and strengthening the monastery community and spiritual renewal are his most important tasks. Among other things, he is a board member of the Pro Oriente Foundation , a member of the Order of Lazarus and Rector of the Byzantine Chapel of the Geras Abbey. Proházka has been teaching Eastern Church Studies at the Philosophical-Theological University of St. Pölten since 2013 .

At the end of June 2018, Proházka announced his resignation as abbot of the Geras Abbey in order to work again as Vice Rector at the Collegium Orientale in Eichstätt.
