Edvard Holm Johannesen
Edvard Holm Johannesen (* 1844 in Middagsbukta, Balsfjord , † December 17, 1901 in Balsfjord) was a Norwegian captain, seafarer and explorer.
Life
He described his pioneering ventures, especially in the Kara Sea with the circumnavigation of Novaya Zemlya , in a contribution to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences , for which he received a silver and a gold medal in 1869 and 1870.
In 1878 he was enclosed by the ice in the Kara Sea and discovered an island of 20 square kilometers at 82.5 ° east, which he called Ensomheden (solitude) .
Johannesen died in a shipwreck in the Balsfjord . His remains have not been found.
