Walter Cardinal Brandmüller (born January 5, 1929 in Ansbach ) is a German theologian , church historian and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . He was president of the Pontifical Committee on History from 1998 to 2009 .

Life

Brandmüller was born in 1929 into an officer's family in Ansbach . He was baptized Protestant (his father was a Catholic, his mother a Protestant), but converted to Catholicism at an early age. In 1948 he passed the Abitur examination at the Carolinum grammar school and then studied Catholic theology. He received on 26 July 1953 in Bamberg by Archbishop Joseph Otto Kolb the priesthood . He then worked as a chaplain in Kronach and the Bamberg parish of St. Martin . It was in 1963 - to a doctoral program at Hermann Tüchle to which he Archbishop Josef Schneider was released - at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich with a thesis on the revival of Catholic communities in the principalities of Ansbach and Bayreuth doctorate . At the same place it was in 1967 with a dissertation on the Council of Pavia-Siena also habilitated . On October 30, 1969, he was appointed professor at what was then the Philosophical-Theological University of Dillingen . After its dissolution, the university professor came to Augsburg on October 7, 1970, where he taught as a full professor for modern and medieval church history at the University of Augsburg until his retirement in 1997 . During this time he was in charge of the parish of the Assumption in Walleshausen .

Since his habilitation, the focus of his academic work has been on the history of the councils . Brandmüller is co-founder and publisher of the journal Annuarium Historiae Conciliorum (Paderborn, since 1969, with a few supplements) and the series of the history of the Council (2 series, since 1979, so far 37 volumes). The festschrift dedicated to him is also under this title. He also published the Handbook of Bavarian Church History (St. Ottilien, 1991–1999, 3 volumes).

He was a member of the Pontifical Commission of Historical Sciences since 1981, President of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Studies in Rome since 1998 and President of the International Commission for Comparative Church History from 1998 to 2006.

In these positions he coordinated the international scientific cooperation between historians and academies of science that deal with topics related to church history. The focus was on the case of Galileo Galilei as well as the Council of Constance and the First Vatican Council . Brandmüller gave lectures at the Institute for Universal History of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, at the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei ("Academy of the Lynx") in Rome and at the German Historical Institute in Paris. In 2009 he went into retirement and handed over office at the Pontifical Committee of Historical Sciences PCSS to Bernard Ardura .

priest

Walter Brandmüller received on July 26 in 1953 by Archbishop Joseph Otto Kolb the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Bamberg .

In 1981 he was appointed Knight of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher by Cardinal Grand Master Maximilian von Fürstenberg and invested in Cologne Cathedral on November 14, 1981 by Franz Hengsbach , Grand Prior of the Order in Germany.

On July 17, 1983, Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness. In 1997, he was appointed canon of St. Peter's Church in Rome and was appointed apostolic protonotary . He was also a canon at the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican .

Since April 2006 Brandmüller has been a member of the Catholic student union KAV Capitolina zu Rome in the CV .

cardinal

In the solemn consistory of November 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI accepted him . as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry San Giuliano dei Fiamminghi in the college of cardinals . He was previously named titular archbishop of Caesarea in Mauretania . On November 13, 2010, Walter Brandmüller received the episcopal ordination through Raffaele Cardinal Farina SDB in the German national church Santa Maria dell'Anima ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Bamberg, Ludwig Schick, and the former Apostolic Nuncio Giuseppe De Andrea . On May 15, 2011, Cardinal Brandmüller celebrated a pontifical ministry in the extraordinary rite for the first time since the liturgical reform of 1969/70 at one of the two main altars of St. Peter, the altar of the Kathedra Petri .

Due to his age - Brandmüller was already older than 80 at the time of his creation as cardinal - he was not eligible to vote at the 2013 conclave .

On September 19, 2016, Cardinal Brandmüller and Cardinals Raymond Leo Burke , Carlo Caffarra and Joachim Meisner addressed the letter Seeking Clarity: a request to untie the knots in 'Amoris Laetitia' to Pope Francis and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . The letter in Latin, written out of concern for the “true well-being of souls, the highest law of the Church”, contains five dubia (“doubts”) with the desire for clarifications on the controversial eighth chapter of the papal letter Amoris laetitia , especially on the question of admission divorced remarried for holy communion . The formulation of such dubia, which can only be answered with “yes” or “no”, is a common ecclesiastical tool that has been used by bishops for centuries in relation to theological questions. On November 14, 2016, the cardinals made the letter public because the Pope had not responded, which was understood as an invitation to the discourse. At the end of November 2016, the dean of the Roman Rota , Pio Vito Pinto , raised allegations against the four cardinals who had "caused a serious scandal".

In September 2018, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI responded . to a letter criticizing the creation of the office of Papa emeritus (retired Pope) through the Pope's resignation in 2013. Several newspapers attribute the letter to Walter Brandmüller. Pope emeritus Benedict made it clear that he saw this criticism as one of his pontificate as a whole; the entire pontificate is "devalued and melted into mourning over the situation of the Church today".

Positions

  • On November 19, 2011 Brandmüller commented on some questions about the sermon at a priestly ordination in Bettbrunn. A sermon must be in accordance with the teaching of the church, then the audience would have the “duty” to listen to it willingly and with reverence. A sermon required a "lifelong study of the Holy Scriptures". The authority to preach is indissolubly linked to consecration. Only bishops, priests and deacons could and should “preach the gospel in the name and authority of Jesus Christ”. Consequently, the so-called lay sermon is illegitimate.
  • In an interview with the German Press Agency at the beginning of January 2019, Walter Brandmüller assessed the outrage over the abuse scandal in the Catholic Church as hypocrisy : “Society is behaving quite hypocritically. ... What abuse has happened in the church is nothing other than what happens in society at all. "
