Remigius Baumer

Remigius Bäumer (born December 11, 1918 in Gevelsberg , † December 26, 1998 in Kirchzarten ) was a German Catholic theologian .

Life

After his school days in Gevelsberg, Bäumer studied Catholic theology in Paderborn from 1937 . In 1940 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht , wounded in 1941 and released from military service, so that he was able to continue his studies in Bonn in 1943 and in Paderborn (Bad Driburg) from 1946. On August 8, 1948, he was ordained a priest in Paderborn.

After a few years of pastoral care, he received his doctorate in theology with Hubert Jedin in Bonn in 1955 with the dissertation The teaching activities of the Pope after Albert Pigge † 1542. A contribution to the history of papalism in the 16th century . From 1956 he was Vice Rector at the Priestly College Campo Santo Teutonico in Rome and since 1957 chief editor of the Lexicon for Theology and Church .

In 1967 he completed his habilitation with the thesis "Aftermath of the conciliar thought in theology and canonical studies of the early 16th century". From 1968 he was a full professor for church history at the theological faculty in Paderborn. Since 1974 he has been professor for middle and modern church history and regional history at the theological faculty of the University of Freiburg i. Br. Until his retirement in 1987. In 1972 Bäumer was elected a full member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia , in 1977 his membership was converted into a corresponding one. Even after his retirement, Bäumer was scientifically active and in 1989 took over the founding rectorate of the Gustav Siewerth Academy in Weilheim -Bierbronnen.

The focus of his scientific publications was the history of the Pope , the Reformation and the Council .
