Bernard Ardura

Bernard Ardura OPraem (born September 1, 1948 in Bordeaux ) is a French religious and church historian . He has been President of the Pontifical Committee on History since 2009 .

Life

Bernard Ardura attended 1958-1966 the minor seminary and joined the religious order of the Premonstratensians at. He studied theology and philosophy from 1966 to 1972 in the seminary in his hometown of Bordeaux. On December 16, 1972, he was ordained a priest . He was a licentiate in dogmatics at the Pontifical Gregorian University . In 1987 Bernard Ardura received a doctorate in theology from the Catholic University of Lyon (Institut Catholique de Lyon) and a doctorate in the history of religion from the University of Saint-Étienne . From 1976 to 1987 Ardura was a professor of dogmatic theology and spiritual theology.

In 1987 Ardura became librarian and archivist of the General Curia of the Premonstratensian Order in Rome. In 1988 Pope John Paul II appointed him Consultor of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in 1988 and was a member of the Commission for Spirituality and a member of the Historical Commission of his order. From 1990 he represented the Congregation in the Committee on Culture of the Council of Europe.

In 1992 Pope John Paul II appointed him Undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture . In 1997 he became its secretary. Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bernard Ardura on December 3, 2009 to succeed Walter Brandmüller as President of the Pontifical Committee for the Study of History. From 2009 to 2012 he was General Procurator of the Order of the Premonstratensian Canons .

He is the author of several books and numerous articles and has worked as an author with various magazines and encyclopedias.
