Pontifical Committee for the Study of History
Pontifical Committee for Historical Studies ( Italian : Pontificio Comitato di Scienze Storiche ) is an institution of the Roman Curia .
history
The committee has its seat in Vatican City and was founded on April 7, 1954 in Rome by Pope Pius XII. launched in response to the invitation to the International Committee of Historical Sciences (ICHS) . The aim was to bring the historical legacy of the Roman church into international history.
The PCSS is the successor organization of the "Cardinals Commission for Historical Sciences", which on the occasion of the first opening of the Vatican Secret Archives in 1883 by Pope Leo XIII. Founded.
The first president of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Studies was the Italian church historian Pio Paschini . The current president is Bernard Ardura OPraem .

For example, the facility takes care of knowledge of the classical languages as well as Russian-Vatican relations after 1918, in cooperation with the Russian Academy of Sciences and its Institute for Universal History. Furthermore, it works with historians and science academies in an international context and researches church-historical topics.
Since 2005, an international media prize has been awarded for contributions on the value of classical languages, which focuses on the value of Latin or Greek for the cultural development of Europe.
