Giovanni Maria Vian

Giovanni Maria Vian (born March 10, 1952 in Rome ) is an Italian church historian and journalist .

Live and act

Giovanni Maria Vian studied philology and church history . In 1991 he taught patristic philology at La Sapienza University in Rome , where he has been a professor since 2005. At times he was also a lecturer in the history of Christian tradition and identity at the Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan .

His teaching and research focus is primarily on the interpretation of the Bible in Judaism and Christianity in antiquity, the history of the Christian tradition and contemporary papacy. He has been a scientific advisor to the Istituto dell'Enciclopedia Italiana since 1976 .

He has been a member of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Studies since 1999 and a member of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology since 2009 and advisor to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications from 2011 to 2016 .

He works for various newspapers and magazines such as Avvenire , Giornale di Brescia and Vita e Pensiero . From 2007 to 2018, Vian was editor-in-chief of the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano . Since 2014 he has also been a member of the International Committee for Media Reform in the Vatican.
