Sergio Pagano CRSP (born November 6, 1948 in Terrusso di Bargagli ) is a Curia Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church . He has been Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives since 1997 .

Life

Sergio Pagano joined the Barnabite Order in 1966 . He studied theology and philosophy in Rome and made his profession on October 19, 1975. The former Bishop of Novara , Placido Maria Cambiaghi CRSP, ordained him on May 28, 1978. After completing his doctorate in theology, specializing in liturgy, he graduated in 1978 as a palaeographic archivist at the Vatican School of Paleography, Diplomatics and Archival Studies. He then worked in the secret archives of the Vatican.

Sergio Pagano has been Professor of Archival Studies at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy , Academician of the Accademia di San Carlo Borromeo and member of the International Archives Council since 1978 . Pope John Paul II appointed him advisor to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints (1985) and to the Pontifical Commission on the Cultural Goods of the Church (1997). From 1989 to 2001 he was director of the Center for Historical Studies of the Barnabites in Rome.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Vice-Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives on January 30, 1995 and shortly afterwards Rector of the Vatican School of Paleography, Diplomatics and Archival Studies .

On January 7, 1997, he was appointed Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives. Sergio Pagano became a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Committee on History . In 2000 he was accepted as a corresponding member in the central management of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica and in the Società Romana di Storia Patria in Rome. In 2005 he became an honorary member of the Associazione italiana per lo studio della santità and a member of the Fondazione Latinitas for the promotion and study of the Latin language. From 2007 to 2012 he was also Scientific Director of the Historical Archive of the Archdiocese of Lucca.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on August 4, 2007 titular bishop of Celene . The Pope personally consecrated him bishop on September 29th of the same year; Co- consecrators were Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone SDB , Cardinal Secretary of State and Chamberlain , and Cardinal Marian Jaworski , Archbishop of Lemberg .

In 2007 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed full member of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Property of the Church. On April 17, 2012, he was confirmed as Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives and appointed a member of the Central Commission for the Archives of the Holy See. On November 10, 2012, he was appointed full member of the Pontificia Academia Latinitatis .

In December 2018, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, a commemorative publication was published in the publication series of the Vatican Secret Archives with the title: "Incorrupta monumenta ecclesiam Defendunt.
