The Scuola Vaticana di Paleografia, Diplomatica e Archivistica (German: Vatican School of paleography , diplomatics and archival science ) is a college of the Holy See in the Vatican City .

history

The training center was established as a department of the Vatican Secret Archives by Pope Leo XIII. founded on May 1, 1884. The aim was to create a school for palaeography and comparative history so that young clergy could gain extensive training. The school was initiated by Isidoro Carini (1843–1895), a renowned historian and paleographer of his time.

From 1896 the school offered decoration of manuscripts. In 1923 Pope Pius XI expanded the school around the archival department. In 1953 the school was opened by Pope Pius XII. reformed. Pope Paul VI moved the seat to the Cortile del Belvedere at the Vatican Apostolic Library in 1968 and placed the school under the patronage of the Cardinal Librarian and Archivist of the Holy Roman Church . In 1976, the management of the school was placed under the Prefect of the Vatican Secret Archives and Paul VI. the still valid business and study regulations finally come into force.

Education

The two-year course includes the subjects of Latin palaeography , general and Vatican diplomacy , codicology and archival studies. In 2000, the range of subjects was expanded to include the teaching of the seal customer.

With the Concordat of 1984, the diplomas of the Scuola were fully recognized by the Italian state (art. 10, n. 2, comma 2).
