Great Kitzberg

The Great Kitzberg is 771  m above sea level. A. high mountain in southern Lower Austria between the Großer Neukogel ( 1053  m , location ) in the southwest and the Piestingtal in the northeast.

Ortmann, which belongs to Pernitz, is located in the north at the foot of the Großer Kitzberg . In the north-east, the Quarb valley runs along the foot of the Kitzberg from Ortmann to Reichental . In the south is the village Waidmannsfeld . From here a road leads along the south-west and west-facing slopes over the Ochsenheide to Neusiedl and on to Pernitz. The Great Kitzberg reaches a height of 771  m above sea level. A.

Just below the summit, where the marked hiking trails end, is the Rudolf-Fordinal-Haus of the alpine society "Alpenfreunde" at 720  m . The previous building built in 1921 by the then independent company “Bergfreunde” as the Bernhuberhütte burned down completely in 1975. The new house was opened just one year later. Initially known as the Alpenfreundehaus , it was renamed the Rudolf Fordinal House in 1992 in honor of the Alpenfreunde chairman Rudolf Fordinal.

To the northwest of the Großer Kitzberg lies the Kleine Kitzberg with a height of 615  m .

Ascents

A marked forest road and two hiking trails lead from Waidmannsfeld in the south to the Rudolf-Fordinal-Haus. From the Ochsenheide there is also a connection path to the above-mentioned forest road, the so-called Hanslsteig . The hiking trail coming from the north from Pernitz also only leads to the Rudolf-Fordinal-Haus and bypasses the actual, wooded summit.

caves

The most famous cave in this area is the 22 m long Jungfrauenloch (Jungfrauenlucke) with the cadastral number 1862/12 . Other caves are the 28 m long Kitzberg Cave (1862/13), the Quarblucke (1862/74) and the Poacher Cave (1862/104), located in impassable terrain.
