José Ruysschaert

José Ruysschaert (born June 11, 1914 in Renaix , † January 9, 1993 in Vatican City ) was a Belgian librarian.

Life

Ordained priest of the Tournai diocese in 1939 and graduated from the University of Leuven in 1947 . Two years later, his thesis was published. From 1949 he was the Latin scribe of the Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana and published, among other things, the catalog of manuscripts of the Roman College of the Society of Jesus. From 1965 he became vice-prefect, but in March 1971, due to the successor to Alfons Raes, prefect since 1962, Alfons Maria Stickler preferred. He was also a teacher at the Scuola Vaticana di Paleografia, Diplomatica e Archivistica and retired in 1984.

He published numerous and authoritative studies, particularly in the fields of Christian archeology, library history, and miniature history. He was also a member of the Comité International de Paléographie Latin and since 1976 a member of the Società romana di storia patria . He left his library and documents to the Fondazione Ezio Franceschini in Florence.
