Paul Canart

Paul Canart (born October 25, 1927 in Cuesmes , † September 14, 2017 in Brussels ) was a Belgian paleographer .

Life

Paul Canart was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels on April 1, 1951 . He then began teaching at the Collège Saint-Pierre in Brussels.

He was appointed Librarian Graecus at the Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana in 1957 and stayed there for forty years: he headed the manuscript department and was the deputy prefect from 1994 to 1997 when he retired. He specialized in the study and cataloging of ancient Greek manuscripts. He taught Greek palaeography at the Scuola Vaticana di Paleografia, Diplomatica e Archivistica , of which he was director from 1979 to 1980 and from 1984 to 1985. He was admitted to the Accademia dei Lincei and elected Apostolic Protonotary. His papers were donated to the Vatican Apostolic Library and the Vatican School of Paleography by his nephews.
