Victor Saxer

Victor Saxer (born April 4, 1918 in Pfastatt , † August 9, 2004 in Rome ) was a French church historian , Christian archaeologist and specialist in early Christian hagiography .

Life

From 1937 to 1942 he studied in the great seminary in Strasbourg . After ordination on July 11, 1943, he continued his university studies in Toulouse (1942–1945), where he obtained a licentiate in literature (1943–1945) and, after the war, a doctorate in theology at the University of Strasbourg (December 19, 1953 ) received. From 1945 to 1957 he was a professor at the small seminary in Hyères . From October 13, 1957 he was a priest in the church of S. Martin in La Crau (Var) in the diocese of Fréjus-Toulon. At the age of 46 he moved to Rome in order to complete specialization courses at the Pontificio Istituto di Archeologia Cristiana from 1964 onwards . On June 17, 1966, he received his diploma there with summa cum laude. On July 29, 1966, he was appointed Associate Professor of Liturgy and Hagiography at the Pontifical Institute for Christian Archeology and on August 30, 1969, Full Professor. He held this chair until his retirement in 1988.
