André Vauchez (born July 24, 1938 in Thionville ) is a French medieval and church historian .

Life

André Vauchez went to school in Strasbourg, studied at the École normal supérieure and then went to the École française de Rome (1965 to 1968), where he directed medieval studies from 1972 to 1979. 1968 to 1972 he was an assistant at the Sorbonne . In 1978 he received his doctorate (Thèse de doctorat) with the dissertation La sainteté en Occident aux derniers siècles du Moyen Âge (1198–1431) . 1979/1980 he was research director of the CNRS . In 1980 he became professor in Rouen and in 1983 at the University of Paris X in Nanterre. From 1995 to 2003 he was director of the École française de Rome . In 1991 he became a member of the Institut universitaire de France .

In 1986 Vauchez was visiting scholar at All Souls College, Oxford University and in 1990/1991 at the Institute for Advanced Study .

He deals with the history of Christian spirituality in the Middle Ages and wrote a biography of Francis of Assisi .

Honors

In 2013 he received the Balzan Prize . He is an honorary doctor of the University of Geneva , an officer of the Legion of Honor , commander of the Palmes Académiques and an officer of the Ordre national du Mérite.

He is a member of the Accademia dei Lincei and the Royal Belgian Academy of Sciences and the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres , of which he was president in 2009.
