The All Souls College (full name: The College of All Souls of the Faithful Departed, of Oxford ) is one of the colleges of Oxford University in the UK .
It is a peculiarity because there are no students at college without a university degree and the membership consists solely of fellows , i.e. trained academics.
Membership is recruited, among other things, by inviting the best graduates of the University of Oxford to take an exam each year . The best two are elected as new fellows. A fellowship at All Souls College is one of the highest academic honors the country has to offer.
In college itself, such a small group of young academics associates with academically established academics such as former Oxford graduates who have now made careers in politics, business or the media.
The college was founded in 1438 by Henry VI. and Henry Chichele , Fellow of New College, Oxford, and Archbishop of Canterbury in memory of those who fell in the Hundred Years War. Today it is primarily a research institution .
The stylish front building has remained almost unchanged since its completion in 1443. Of particular interest in the main building, Great Quadrangle, completed in 1733, are the twin towers designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and the sundial installed by Christopher Wren in 1658 .
