The Reuben College is a new constituent college of the University of Oxford in England. Plans for the new college were announced in December 2018, tentatively named Parks College . It is the first new Oxbridge College since Kellogg College was founded in 1990. It is located in the science area on the grounds of the historic Radcliffe Science Library.
history
The establishment of Parks College was approved by a vote in the university's congregation on May 7, 2019 . On June 11, 2020, the university announced that it was changing the name of the college from Parks College to Reuben College due to a £ 80 million grant from the Reuben Foundation . The college was officially renamed on June 30, 2020.
The college initially plans to enroll 200 postgraduate students in the 2021-2022 academic year. Initially, the focus will be on three interdisciplinary research clusters (artificial intelligence and machine learning, ecological change and cellular life), which will later be increased to six or eight clusters.
Professor Lionel Tarassenko (Head of the Institute of Engineering) was invited by Vice Chancellor Louise Richardson to oversee the development of the college as a founding president. The college named its first fellows in 2019 , including Jane A. McKeating and EJ Milner-Gulland.
building
The current building of the Radcliffe Science Library (RSL) is next to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History and consists of three parts:
- The Jackson Wing, parallel to South Parks Road, is a listed building and was designed by Thomas Graham Jackson and opened in 1901. This extends over 3 floors above ground.
- The Worthington Wing, parallel to Parks Road, was designed by Hubert Worthington in 1934 as an extension of the Jackson Wing. The wing extends north of the west end of the Jackson Wing and contains the entrance area on the first floor.
- The Lankester Room and Main Stack form a two-story extension and were built between 1972 and 1975.
Reuben College will also consist of the western wing of the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory and Abbot's Kitchen.
The completion of the renovation of the RSL building is planned for the beginning of the academic year 2021–2022. The completion of the redevelopment of the west wing of the laboratory for inorganic chemistry (potential room for the dining room), Abbot's Kitchen and the connecting rooms is planned for the beginning of the academic year 2022-2023.
Student accommodation is offered in the newly renovated building on Farndon Court.
administration
Reuben, along with Kellogg and St Cross, is one of only three Oxford colleges without a Royal Charter . It is officially a "society" of the university and not an independent college. The main difference from an independent college is that the governing body only recommends a president who is then appointed by the university council. In other colleges, leadership is elected and appointed directly by the governing body. For accounting reasons, the companies are considered to be departments of the university.
