Edward II founded The House of Blessed Mary the Virgin in Oxford in 1326 in honor of the Virgin Mary after he was saved at the Battle of Bannockburn . The original building was named L'Oriole , so the college was named Oriel College. In the 17th century, the front building was largely restored in a splendid Gothic style.

Fellows at Oriel College included John Keble , John Henry Newman, and Edward Bouverie Pusey .
