Provost (University)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Provost is a title for senior university administrator in the US and Canada , comparable to the vice-chancellor at universities in the UK . The exact role of the Provost varies from institution to institution. At the universities of Cambridge and Oxford in England , this is the title of one of the highest administrative officials (roughly equivalent to a Pro-Vice Chancellor) and is on a par with the Master’s degree , which is also used there . It is also used in colleges in the UK and Ireland .

The designation provost was in German-speaking countries for the guards of Karzers at universities used. The term came from the Dutch provoost (from Latin propositus or praepositus 'superior') via the French prévôté into German around 1500. The term is related to the official title provost .
