Enrico dal Covolo SDB (born October 5, 1950 in Feltre , Veneto , Italy ) is an Italian religious and Roman Catholic bishop . He was rector of the Pontifical Lateran University from 2010 to 2018 .

Life

Enrico dal Covolo studied Classical Philology at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and Religious Studies at the Pontifical Patristic Institute Augustinianum in Rome . He received a doctorate in patristic theology .

In 1973 he joined the Order of the Salesians of Don Bosco and was ordained a priest in 1976 . He was vicar in Chiari (Brescia) and Milan, later head of the Ispettoria Salesiana Lombardo Emiliana and rector of the Istituto Tecnico Industriale Don Bosco . In 1986 he became professor of ancient Greek Christian literature at the Faculty of Christian and Classical Literature Studies (Pontificium Institutum Altioris Latinitatis) at the Pontifical University of the Salesians in Rome and was dean of the faculty from 1993 to 2000 .

From 1988 to 1997 he was also responsible for the formation of deacons in the community of St. Thomas at the University. In 1999 he became a member of the Pontifical Committee on History , a member of the Commission for the Preparation of the Great Jubilee Year 2000 and head of the Pontifical Academy of Theology and the Pontifical International Marian Academy . From 2000 to 2003 he was Pro-Rector of UPS and Coordinator of Pastoral Education for Universities in the Diocese of Rome . In 2000 he became general postulator for the beatification and canonization of the Salesians. In 2002, John Paul II appointed him as an advisor to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and later also to the Congregation for the Clergy . In 2009 he was appointed a member of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology.

On June 30, 2010 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed as successor to Rino Fisichella as rector of the Pontifical Lateran University and on September 15 of the same year as titular bishop of Heraclea . He was ordained bishop on October 9, 2010 by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone SDB in St. Peter's Basilica ; Co- consecrators were the Cardinal Vicar for the Diocese of Rome, Cardinal Agostino Vallini , and the Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and for Societies of Apostolic Life , Cardinal Franc Rodé CM .

In 2011 he was appointed Grand Officer (Commander with Star) of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

On June 2, 2018 , Pope Francis appointed the international lawyer and Vatican diplomat Vincenzo Buonomo to succeed Enrico dal Covolo as the first lay person to become rector of the Lateran University .

Act

Dal Covolo has published numerous scientific papers and works. He is part of the editorial team of Corona Patrum , which publishes a number of patristic texts. He was the editor of the Maritano l'Introduzione ai Padri della Chiesa (1990-1999), a six-volume introduction to the emergence of Christianity. He is on the editorial boards of Annales Theologici , Filosofia e Teologia , Path , Ricerche Teologiche , Sacrum Ministry , Salesianum and Theotókos .
