Scientific self-image

The KonGe sees itself as the successor of the great Conciliengeschichte founded by Karl Joseph von Hefele and Josef Hergenröther (1855–1890), which was then translated into French by Henri Leclercq and revised (Carl Joseph Hefele, Histoire des conciles d'après les documents originaux . Nouvelle traduction française corrigée et augmentée par Henri Leclercq, 9 double volumes [Paris 1907–1931]). Charles de Clercq then added two volumes to the Conciles des orientaux catholiques and was reprinted in 1973.

The KonGe strives for a comprehensive new presentation of the Council and Synodal history on a universal church and regional level. Committed to the current requirements of the church-historical method , the KonGe not only wants to describe the prerequisites , processes and topics as well as the historical situation and reception of the respective councils in a reflective way, but also to adequately determine their theological relevance . Councils are characterized both as historical events in a broad sense as well as landmarks of theology history are recorded.
