Carlo Cardinal Caffarra (born June 1, 1938 in Samboseto di Busseto , Province of Parma , Italy ; † September 6, 2017 in Bologna ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Bologna .

Life

After studying Catholic theology in the Episcopal Seminary in Fidenza , Caffarra received the sacrament of ordination on July 2, 1961 in Samboseto from the local Bishop Guglielmo Bosetti . He then received his doctorate in Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University with a thesis on the termination of marriages and also specialized in moral theology at the Pontifical Alfonsina Academy , which he subsequently taught at the Universities of Fidenza and Parma.

Pope Paul VI Appointed him to the International Theological Commission in 1974 . In 1980 Pope John Paul II appointed him expert on marriage and family issues at the Synod of Bishops and head of the Pontifical Institute “John Paul II for Studies on Marriage and Family” at the Pontifical Lateran University . He also made him Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on February 5 of the same year . In 1983 he also became a consultor to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith .

On September 8, 1995, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Ferrara-Comacchio . The Archbishop of Bologna , Giacomo Cardinal Biffi , donated him episcopal consecration on October 21, 1995 in the Cathedral of Fidenza . Co- consecrators were Archbishop of the Curia Giovanni Battista Re , at that time a substitute for the Vatican State Secretariat , and the Bishop of Fidenza , Carlo Poggi .

The Archdiocese of Ferrara-Comacchio was Caffarra before his appointment as Archbishop of Bologna on December 16, 2003, whose leadership he officially took over on February 15, 2004 with his inauguration in the Cathedral of Bologna .

Carlo Caffarra was a moral theologian and a member of the lay movement Comunione e Liberazione . After the death of John Paul II and the election of Joseph Ratzinger as Pope, he was discussed in the media as his possible successor in the office of Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . In 2016, Carlo Caffarra and Cardinals Raymond Leo Burke , Joachim Meisner and Walter Brandmüller approached Pope Francis to express their dubia (“doubts”) on the controversial eighth chapter of his letter Amoris laetitia .

Carlo Caffarra was involved in numerous social projects in the Holy Land . He was Grand Cross Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and its Grand Prior of the Emilia Section from 2003 to 2015.
