Matteo Maria Cardinal Zuppi (born October 11, 1955 in Rome ) is an Italian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Bologna .

Life

Zuppi, a great-nephew of Cardinal Carlo Confalonieri (1893-1986), studied at the seminary of Palestrina and at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. The Bishop of Palestrina, Renato Spallanzani , ordained him a priest on May 9, 1981 . He was incardinated on November 15, 1988 in the clergy of the Diocese of Rome . There he carried out various tasks in the following years, including from 1995 a member of the Priestly Council of the Diocese of Rome. From 1990 he mediated the negotiations between the conflicting parties in the civil war in Mozambique that had been going on since 1975 . This led to the conclusion of a peace treaty in October 1992. Since 2000 he was chaplain of the Community of Sant'Egidio . In 2006 Pope Benedict XVI awarded him . the title of Honorary Chaplain to His Holiness .

On January 31, 2012, Benedict XVI appointed him. the auxiliary bishop in Rome and titular bishop of Villanova . The cardinal vicar and archpriest of the Lateran Basilica , Agostino Cardinal Vallini , donated him and the auxiliary bishop Lorenzo Leuzzi, who was appointed at the same time, the episcopal ordination on April 14th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Giovanni Battista Pichierri , Archbishop of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie , and Vincenzo Paglia , Bishop of Terni-Narni-Amelia .

Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Bologna on October 27, 2015 . The inauguration took place on December 12 of the same year.

On September 1, 2019, Pope Francis announced that he would be admitted to the College of Cardinals as a cardinal priest in the consistory of October 5, 2019 . When the cardinal was created, the Pope assigned him the titular church of Sant'Egidio in Trastevere on October 5, 2019 . The ownership of his titular church took place on January 11, 2020. On February 21, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Dicastery for the Holistic Development of Man . On April 18, 2020, the Pope also appointed him a member of the property administration of the Apostolic See .
