history

In 1191 a church called San Lorenzo was mentioned near Santa Maria in Trastevere .

In 1610 the church was rebuilt and the patronage was changed to Egidio . Pope Urban VIII entrusted the Church to the Discalced Carmelites, who had a branch next door.

At the location of today's church there was initially one that had received the patronage of Santi Chrispino e Crispiniano in the second half of the 16th century .

Now the order had to maintain two churches. They decided to demolish the first church of Sant'Egidio and to build a church on the site of San Biagio, dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Sant'Egidio. Since there are several churches of Mary in Rome, the church was called Sant'Egidio.

In 1973 the Community of Sant'Egidio took over the monastery and the church as their headquarters after the nuns moved out. The previously unnamed community named itself after the church. Part of the former monastery is used as a museum.

Pope Francis elevated the church to the title church on October 5, 2019 and at the same time appointed Matteo Maria Zuppi , who was also chaplain of the Community of Sant'Egidio before his episcopal ordination, as the first cardinal priest .

inner space

Inside the single-nave church, the tomb of Veronica Rondinini created by Carlo Fontana and a painting of St. Aegidius by Cristoforo Roncalli , called il Pomarancio , are worth mentioning.
