Mariano Armellini

Mariano Armellini (born February 7, 1852 in Rome , † February 24, 1896 in Rome) was an Italian archaeologist and historian.

biography

As a student of Girolamo Rossi, he devoted himself to Christian archeology and became a lecturer at the Seminario Pontificio and the Collegio di Propaganda in Rome.

One of his discoveries is the crypt of Saint Emerenziana in the cemetery on Via Nomentana near Sant'Agnese.

He wrote Gli antichi cimiteri cristiani di Roma e d'Italia, Le catacombe romane (The ancient Christian cemeteries of Rome and Italy, The Roman catacombs) , but he was written primarily for Le chiese di Roma dal secolo IV al XIX (The churches Rome from the 4th to the 19th century) , an extensive work in which many churches in the city, including those that have already disappeared, are listed.

He also devoted himself intensively to the description of Roman life from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance .
