Giovanni Battista Pichierri (born February 12, 1943 in Sava , Apulia ; † July 26, 2017 in Trani , Apulia) was an Italian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie-Nazareth .

Life

Giovanni Battista Pichierri studied philosophy and theology at the diocesan seminary of the diocese of Oria and was ordained a priest on August 30, 1967 . In 1970 he completed further studies in ecumenical theology at the Ecumenical Faculty of Bari. He was active in pastoral care in the diocese of Oria. In 1986 he was appointed vicar general and moderator of the curia .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Cerignola - Ascoli Satriano on December 21, 1990 . The Bishop of Oria, Armando Franco , gave him on 26 January 1991 in Chiesa Madre of Manduria the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Andrea Mariano Magrassi OSB , Archbishop of Bari-Bitonto , and Benigno Luigi Papa OFMCap , Archbishop of Taranto . As a motto he chose Oportet illum crescere .

On November 13, 1999, he was appointed Archbishop of Trani-Barletta-Bisceglie-Nazareth by John Paul II, and on January 26 of the following year he was appointed to the office.

He was prior of the Nazareth / Barletta Commandery of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
