Benigno Luigi Papa OFMCap (born August 25, 1935 in Spongano ) is an Italian religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Taranto .

Life

Benigno Luigi Papa joined the order of the Capuchins and was ordained a priest on March 25, 1961 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Mamertina-Palmi on September 29, 1981 . The Archbishop of Turin , Cardinal Anastasio Alberto Ballestrero OCD , donated him episcopal ordination on December 27 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Andrea Mariano Magrassi OSB , Archbishop of Bari-Canosa and Bishop of Bitonto , and Aureliano Sorrentino , Bishop of Bova and Muro Lucano , Archbishop of Reggio Calabria .

On May 11, 1990 he was named Archbishop of Taranto . Pope Benedict XVI accepted on November 21, 2011 Benigno Luigi Papa's resignation due to reasons of age.

He is Prior of the Commandery Taranto of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .

From April 4, 2016 until the inauguration of the new Archbishop on January 7 of the following year, he was Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela during the Sedis vacancy .
