Filippo Santoro (born July 12, 1948 in Carbonara ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Taranto .

Life

Filippo Santoro was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Bari-Canosa on May 20, 1972 . From 1974 to 1984 he held leading positions for the Comunione e Liberazione movement in Puglia, before doing the same activities in Brazil until 1996 . In 1992 he was a member of the Holy See delegation to the Fourth General Conference of Latin American Bishops in Santo Domingo.

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and titular bishop of Tuscamia on April 10, 1996 . The Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro , Cardinal Eugênio de Araújo Sales , donated him episcopal ordination on June 29 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were Gianni Danzi , Secretary of the Governorate of the Vatican City , and Karl Josef Romer , Auxiliary Bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. As a motto he chose Verbum Caro Factum .

He was appointed Bishop of Petrópolis on May 12, 2004 and was introduced to the office on June 11 of the same year. In Petrópolis, Santoro was also Grand Chancellor of the Catholic university there. He was appointed Archbishop of Taranto on November 21, 2011 and was introduced to the office on January 5 of the next year.

Santoro, who is attributed to the conservative wing of the Italian episcopate in the media, was considered a candidate for the office of President of the Italian Bishops' Conference in 2017 .
