Salvatore Cardinal De Giorgi (born September 6, 1930 in Vernole , Province of Lecce , Italy ) is Archbishop Emeritus of Palermo .

Life

Salvatore De Giorgi was in Lecce and Molfetta his theological training and was on June 28 in 1953 by the Bishop of Lecce , Francesco Minerva , for priests ordained . He then served as personal secretary to the Bishop of Lecce for five years. From 1958 to 1973 he worked as a parish chaplain in the Archdiocese of Lecce, but also fulfilled numerous other responsibilities. He was in charge of the association of Catholic Italian university students, advised the community of Catholic teachers, belonged to the diocesan commission for church music and was episcopal vicar for the lay apostolate .

On November 21, 1973, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to titular bishop of Tulana and auxiliary bishop in Oria . He received episcopal ordination on December 27th of the same year by the Bishop of Lecce, Francesco Minerva . Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Taranto , Guglielmo Motolese , and the Bishop of Oria, Alberico Semeraro . On November 29, 1975 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Oria and on March 17, 1978 succeeded his predecessor Alberico Semeraro as diocesan bishop in this diocese .

On April 4, 1981 Pope called him John Paul II. To the Archbishop of Foggia and gave him the same time the management of dioceses Bovino and Troia . On October 10, 1987, Salvatore De Giorgi became Archbishop of Taranto , where he worked until his resignation on May 11, 1990. He then served as an ecclesiastical advisor at the International Forum of Catholic Action and President of the Italian Association for Spiritual Exercises . On April 4, 1996, Pope John Paul II made him head of the Archdiocese of Palermo. The official inauguration took place on May 25th in the Cathedral of Palermo . In September of the same year he became chairman of the Sicilian Episcopal Conference .

On February 21, 1998, Salvatore De Giorgi was admitted to the College of Cardinals as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli . He was a participant in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen. On December 19, 2006, he accepted De Giorgi's resignation due to reasons of age.

In spring 2012, Pope Benedict XVI entrusted him. as a member of a three-person cardinal commission with a special mandate to investigate the so-called Vatileaks affair. The commission is supposed to investigate cases of theft of confidential (papal) documents from the Vatican secret archives .
