Life

Joseph Otto Kolb attended the new grammar school in Bamberg as a pupil of the archbishop's college for boys, Ottonianum, and graduated from high school there in 1901. He then studied philosophy and theology at the University of Innsbruck from 1901/02 and continued his studies from 1902–1905 at the Philosophical-Theological University in Bamberg. After his ordination on July 30, 1905 in Bamberg, he was initially chaplain in Schlüsselfeld until September 1907 and then worked as a pastor at the Bayreuth Castle Church . In September 1911 he was appointed "inspector" (= director) of the archbishop's seminary for boys in Ottonianum. The position of a part-time religion teacher at the new grammar school in Bamberg was connected with this activity. From February 1, 1924 until his appointment to the Archbishop's Metropolitan Chapter in Bamberg on July 1, 1935, he held the parish of St. Elisabeth in Nuremberg.

Kolb was appointed titular bishop of Velicia on August 10, 1935 and at the same time auxiliary bishop in Bamberg (consecration on October 13, 1935). After the death of his predecessor, he took over the office of archbishop (inauguration on May 9, 1943).

He established the St. Joseph Foundation for church social housing and headed the archdiocese during the Nazi era. Since 1901 he was a member of the Catholic student union AV Austria Innsbruck .
