Johann Ertlin

Johann Ertlin (* around 1545 in Sulzdorf ; † March 26, 1607 in Bamberg ; also Johann Oertlein ) was a German Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop .

In Dillingen Ertlin received the degree of a master's degree in philosophy . He then became court master in Eichstätt, and in 1567 “preacher” in Jettingen. 1568 Ertlin became a priest for the diocese of Eichstaett ordained . He held his primacy on February 9, 1568. He then became an episcopal chaplain, cathedral preacher and professor there . In 1579 he received his doctorate as Dr. theol. in Ingolstadt . In 1576 Johann Ertlein became canon in Forchheim and pastor at the local St. Martin Church .

The Bamberg bishop Martin von Eyb selected him on November 4, 1580 as auxiliary bishop. On May 10, 1581 Pope Gregory XIII appointed him . titular bishop of Athyra and confirmed him as auxiliary bishop in Bamberg. The auxiliary bishop in Eichstätt, Wolfgang Holl , donated him the episcopal ordination on November 30, 1581 in the court chapel in Bamberg . Johann Ertlin became canon at the collegiate church Sankt Stephan and officiated as pastor at St. Martin in Bamberg. He was involved in the establishment of the seminary of the diocese of Bamberg under Bishop Ernst von Mengersdorf in 1586. Ertlin took care of the internal organization of this institution and implemented the reforms of the Council of Trento in the bishopric of Bamberg .
