Martin Wiesend (born April 28, 1910 in Kulmain ; † March 7, 2003 in Bamberg ) was auxiliary bishop in Bamberg .

Life

After graduating from high school in Landshut , Martin Wiesend first studied law and economics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1930 he became a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Aenania Munich in the CV , later also the KDStV Fredericia Bamberg in the CV . In 1932 Wiesend entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Bamberg and began studying Catholic theology . Shortly before the National Socialists were brought into line in 1933, he was a senior at Aenania.

On January 31, 1937, Martin Wiesend received the sacrament of ordination and then worked as a pastor in Fürth , Oberailsfeld and Nuremberg . In 1938 Wiesend returned to Bamberg and became prefect in the archbishop's seminary for boys in Ottonianum . His superior was the later auxiliary bishop Johannes Lenhardt , whom Martin Wiesend was to follow as auxiliary bishop in Bamberg. In 1944 Martin Wiesend became pastor in the parish of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in Nuremberg. From 1958 to 1962 he was city ​​dean of Nuremberg, in 1962 he was appointed to the Metropolitan Chapter of the Archdiocese of Bamberg.

Pope Paul VI appointed Wiesend in 1967 titular bishop of Migirpa and auxiliary bishop in Bamberg . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Josef Schneider on 27 March 1967 at the Bamberg Cathedral . On this occasion he chose the episcopal motto In verbo tuo (“On your word”) based on the motto of the Bamberg Catholic Day 1966 “At your word I will cast my nets and do my work” . From 1967 to 1986 he was provost of the Bamberg cathedral chapter . For the period of the Sedis vacancy after Archbishop Josef Schneider's retirement due to old age, he was elected diocesan administrator by the Bamberg Cathedral Chapter in 1976 and was thus provisional head of the Archdiocese of Bamberg until Elmar Maria Kredel's inauguration on July 2, 1977.

On August 31, 1985, Pope John Paul II Wiesends accepted a resignation due to reasons of age.

Wiesend was committed to the young generation in the church professions and the training of priests, and in particular to the missionary work of the church. The extensive renovation of the imperial cathedral was carried out on the initiative of his office as provost.

Awards

He was also the namesake for the Martin Wiesend School, a school for individual language training in Bamberg.
