Bonifaz Kaspar von Urban (born January 6, 1773 in Oberherrnhausen near Beuerberg ; † January 9, 1858 in Bamberg ) was the 3rd Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Bamberg . His rise from a simple farmer's son to the successor to the Bamberg prince-bishops was only possible through the enormous upheavals of the Enlightenment .

Life

At the age of six he attended the elementary school of the Augustinian Canons of the Beuerberg monastery in Upper Bavaria , and at the age of 11 the Augustinian college in Munich . In 1790 he graduated from the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich . He then entered the Augustinian order in 1792 and was ordained a priest in 1796 . Until the abolition of the monastery by secularization in 1803, he was tutor of the Beuerberg clergy (for physics, logic and moral theology), as well as chaplain and pastor of local communities.

The expropriation of the Augustinians forced Urban to teach at secular institutes: 1803 as high school professor and music director in Landshut , 1808 as high school professor for rhetoric and religion teacher in Munich , in 1813 at the educational seminar for higher daughters in Munich. In 1817 he rose to the position of royal court chaplain and teacher of religion to the princesses of Bavaria.

Urban owed his appointment to the new metropolitan chapter of Munich and Freising in 1821 to his good reputation in the royal family , from which numerous bishops emerged after Ludwig I's accession to the throne in 1825. He became a clergyman in the ordinariate and in the general vicariate, in 1827 additionally cathedral priest in Munich.

1832 joined Urban as Domdekan to Regensburg, was there in 1833 Vicar General , 1834 provost and finally on 19 December 1834 the auxiliary bishop of Regensburg and titular bishop of Taenarum appointed. He received his episcopal ordination on March 22, 1835 from the Archbishop of Munich and Freising , Lothar Anselm von Gebsattel .

At the royal request, the appointment as Archbishop of Bamberg followed on February 24, 1842, which Pope Gregory XVI. Confirmed on May 25, 1842. The solemn enthronement took place on July 24, 1842 in Bamberg Cathedral.

In 1848 Urban took part in the first German Bishops' Conference in Würzburg .

Urban was distinguished by deep piety and sincere humanity. He was charitable, close to the people and loyal to both the Pope and the King. In several foundations, he thought of poor families, including non-denominational ones, and lived as an example of charity and modesty.

The city of Bamberg granted him honorary citizenship in 1852, and after his death in 1858 he was buried in Bamberg Cathedral .
