Heinrich von Volkach (incorrectly also Heinrich von Volckraht ; Heinrich von Voglbach ; * around 1310 in Volkach ; † October 27, 1359 ) was auxiliary bishop in Regensburg from 1352 to 1359 . He previously held the post of prior in the Carmelite Monastery of Bamberg .

Life

The early years of Heinrich von Volkach's life are largely in the dark. What is certain is that the future clergyman was born in the Lower Franconian town of Volkach. Heinrich's parents are not mentioned in the sources. Maybe the Carmelites of the nearby Vogelsburg noticed the promising boy and encouraged him. However, since they did not have a school, they sent Heinrich either to the Carmelite Monastery of St. Barbara in Würzburg or to Bamberg, which is further away.

Heinrich was first mentioned by name in 1333. At that time he held the position of information officer in the Carmelite monastery in Bamberg . As part of this task, he instructed the professed and introduced them to religious life. Heinrich was probably a philosophy student in 1333 who was just about to start studying theology. From this it can be concluded that Heinrich was around 23 years old at the time.

In 1335 Heinrich von Volkach began studying at the Carmelite College in Paris . As a theology student in Paris, he is also proven in 1336. Any degrees and academic degrees are not mentioned in the sources. After his studies he returned to Bamberg and replaced Prior Bernhard von Wenden in 1344 . As prior, Heinrich was responsible for the monastery administration, and he was also the chairman of the convent.

After the end of his term of office, Heinrich was transferred from the order to Regensburg . The then reigning Prince-Bishop Friedrich von Zollern took on Heinrich and elected him auxiliary bishop. Pope Clement VI appointed Heinrich on July 20, 1352 titular bishop of Megara , the consecration of the newly elected took place in the same year by Pierre IV Despres, the cardinal of Palestrina.

As auxiliary bishop, Heinrich held a number of church consecrations . For example, the Benediction of the pilgrimage church in Sossau near Straubing has been handed down for October 21, 1352 . Heinrich also consecrated the Achatius altar in the monastery church of Weltenburg Abbey on January 7, 1358 . After his death, Heinrich bequeathed some vineyards to his convent in Bamberg in the Franconian town of Ostheim, which can be identified as Astheim near his native Volkach. Heinrich died on October 27, 1359.
