Johann II. (Schlüchtern)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann II , born Johann Zollner (* before 1436; † spring 1457) was abbot of the Schlüchtern monastery and its first abbot of non- aristocratic origin.

Johann Zollner was initially prior under his predecessor Dietrich II and thus leader of the conventuals , who were in resolute opposition to their abbot. When Dietrich II had to resign in 1436 due to political pressure from the monastery bailiff , Count Reinhard II of Hanau , Johann Zollner took over as his successor. For the count, who endeavored to enforce his sovereignty also with regard to the extensive property of the monastery in the upper Kinzig valley , a bourgeois candidate without the usual family ties in the lower nobility of the region came in very handy. Johann II was presumably elected by the convent - as usual - but then presented by the count to the diocesan bishop in Würzburg , Johann II von Brunn , which was new and is also a sign of how the Counts of Hanau endeavored to build the monastery to integrate into their sovereignty. The bishop accepted this practice. Last attested by a document in 1456, Johann II seems to have died in the spring of 1457.
