Joseph Friedrich Schreiber , since 1875 Knight von Schreiber (born May 23, 1819 in Bissingen near Dillingen an der Donau , Bavaria, † May 23, 1890 in Bamberg ) was Archbishop of Bamberg from 1875 to 1890 .

Life

Friedrich Schreiber was born as the fifth of nine children of the court secretary Anton Schreiber and his wife Marie Agnes, b. Bosch, born in Bissingen. After attending elementary school, Schreiber moved to the "Royal St. Stephan College" in Augsburg . There he passed the grammar school graduation in August 1838 . Schreiber studied theology in Munich and from October 1841 in Dillingen an der Donau .

On June 10, 1843, he received the Holy Sacrament of ordination in Augsburg Cathedral . He took up his first position in the same year as a chaplain in Hohenwarth. In 1844, with the approval of the episcopal ordinariate, he took over a position as private tutor in the house of Prince Karl zu Oettingen-Wallerstein.

Another station from 1852 to 1859 was the leadership of the parish in Ried near Zusmarshausen , then Schreiber took over the parish in Penzing until 1870 and then worked for five years in Engelbrechtsmünster near Ingolstadt. In Penzig and Engelbrechtsmünster, Schreiber worked as a district school inspector in addition to pastoral care.

In 1867, Schreiber was awarded the title and rank of "Royal Spiritual Council" by Ludwig II, and in 1873 he was awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Merit of St. Michael . In 1875 he was appointed Archbishop of Bamberg. On August 24, 1875, King Ludwig II awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown , which raised him to the personal nobility .

In 1887, Schreiber founded the "Friedrich von Schreiber'sche Foundation" with funds from his private fortune as the sponsor of the "Mariahilf Institution for Female Servants". The institute was built on Bamberg's Stephansberg. (Today the vocational school for housekeeping , child care and social care is housed in the rooms of the Mariahilf-Anstalt ; the “St. Kunigund” nursing home is also part of the Mariahilf house.)

In 1889 the city of Bamberg granted him honorary citizenship . The scribe, who had a serious heart condition, died a year later and was buried in the crypt in the north aisle of Bamberg Cathedral. The tomb of the archbishop that can be seen today in the cathedral of Bamberg dates from 1920.

Posthumous honors

In Bissingen a street and the kindergarten were named after Friedrich von Schreiber. There is also a street named after the archbishop in Penzing and Bamberg.
