The Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU) is the only Catholic university in the German-speaking region and one of over 200 Catholic universities worldwide. With 5,330 students, 843 of whom are college students (WS 2016/17), it is one of the largest non-state universities in Germany. The university offers over 40 subjects. The central campus is in Eichstätt ; the Faculty of Business and Economics with 1099 students is located in Ingolstadt . Forerunners of the foundation university founded in 1980 were a lyceum founded in Eichstätt in 1843, which was renamed "Philosophical-Theological University" in 1924, as well as the Eichstätt Pedagogical University, founded in 1958, both of which were combined in 1972 to form the Eichstätt University. The comprehensive university was the first comprehensive, non-state academic university in the Federal Republic.

Eichstatt's university tradition began in the 16th century. As part of the Tridentine reform , the Collegium Willibaldinum was opened on November 26, 1564 as a training and residence for the future clergy of the diocese; Even today, the Collegium Willibaldinum is the diocese's seminary. In 1972 this merged with the Eichstätt University of Education, founded in 1958, to form the Eichstätt University . This was raised to the Catholic University of Eichstätt in 1980. The current name of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt came into being in 2001, after the economics faculty was founded in Ingolstadt in 1989.
University of Ingolstadt
The University of Ingolstadt , the first Bavarian university, was founded in Ingolstadt as early as 1472 with papal approval (Würzburg, which had had a university since 1402, did not belong to Bavaria at that time). One of the most important rectors of the university was Petrus Canisius , venerated as a saint, in the middle of the 16th century. Elector Max IV. Foundation and development of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt
In 1972 the University of Education and the Philosophical-Theological University in Eichstätt merged to form a comprehensive university. The Catholic University of Eichstätt was established on April 1, 1980 and recognized by the Holy See . The former Archbishop of Munich-Freising, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI ), who was awarded an honorary doctorate for this, the Eichstätter Bishop Alois Brems , who, as the locally responsible bishop, had made sustained efforts to expand and promote the building, played a decisive role , and Rudolf Mosis , President of the University from 1978 to 1983.

Recent developments
Since the 2007/2008 winter semester, it has been possible to acquire a Bachelor's and Master's degree in the chosen subject combination (“Lehramt Plus”) as part of a teaching degree leading to the first state examination .
Since 2008, the university has been part of the Bavarian Center for Political Theory (BayPol) through the Chair for Political Theory and Philosophy ( Manfred Brocker , Political Science ). The KU Eichstätt is a member of the MedienCampus Bayern , the umbrella organization for media education and training in Bavaria. The KU is not a member of the German Research Foundation , but researchers at the KU already receive project funding from the DFG and other sponsors.
Ulrich Hemel , who was elected by the University Council of the Catholic University on January 30, 2008 , was unable to take office as the new President. According to media reports, the Holy See blocked the appointment of the new president. Grand Chancellor Bishop Hanke entrusted Rudolf Fisch and the order historian Gert Melville with the provisional management of the university.
After a successful electoral process, the theologian Reinhard Hütter, who teaches at Duke University (USA), was elected as the new president on May 6, 2009 . Hütter accepted the election, but later announced that he would not take up the office. The reasons given by the Bavarian Bishops' Conference were an unsuccessful agreement when the contract was concluded. On June 4, 2009, Andreas Lob-Hüdepohl was appointed as interim president.
Richard Schenk was elected President of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt on May 26, 2011 by the University Council. On February 24, 2014, he announced his resignation from office for health reasons. The executing agency appointed an interim presidium for a period of two years in order to gain enough time to prepare for a new election process. The interim board of directors headed by Eichstätter German studies professor Gabriele Gien has been in office for two years since October 1, 2014. On June 15, 2016, she was elected full president for five years by the KU electoral commission. She prevailed against the astrophysicist Wolfgang Duschl from the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . Her term officially began on October 1, 2016.
The college building and the cafeteria building (mainly designed by Karljosef Schattner ), i.e. the central part of the Eichstätter campus, were listed as a historical monument in June 2018. The planned renovations and conversions of these buildings will therefore be delayed.
Since June 2018, the KU, together with the Technical University of Ingolstadt, has been a research partner of the Urban Air Mobility initiative , as part of which the CityAirbus air taxi project is to be tested in the Ingolstadt area . The university has 5,330 students (winter semester 2016/17; university and technical college courses) and more than 772 teachers, 114 of them professors. The supervisory ratio is around 1:14. Sustainable KU
The KU has been a pioneer in the theory and practice of sustainability (Rio follow-up process) since 1992 and has received several awards for this. In 1995 the Franz von Assisi Academy for the Protection of the Earth was founded as a special contribution to the European Year of Conservation on the initiative of the Student Convention's Environment Department with the support of the Council of Europe . The KU and FAA were represented with a large delegation and numerous events at the Second European Ecumenical Assembly in Graz in 1997 and were responsible for the area of sustainability on behalf of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences , including the Ecumenical Consultation: Christianity and Sustainable Europe - Consultation about the new practice of ecological responsibility was organized with over 120 participants from over 24 countries. In 2008, the environmental department of the Student Convention won a prize in the Generation D ideas competition with its Sustainable Campus initiative (100% green electricity for the KU). The DenkNachhaltig! e. V. annually organized WFI Dialogue on Sustainability is the largest student conference on sustainability in German-speaking countries.

The heating energy consumption of the KU in 2015 was 5909 megawatt hours (compared to 2011: 6002 megawatt hours). 78 percent of this is covered by the biomass cogeneration plant on the Volksfestplatz. The rest is covered by natural gas (21 percent, 1241 megawatt hours) and oil (1 percent).

Faculty of Mathematics and Geography

The economics faculty of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, which appears publicly under the name WFI - Ingolstadt School of Management , is located on the second campus of the university in Ingolstadt. Social work
The social work is also an institution of the university. It is legally organized as a registered association . All students at the university are automatically members of the association and contribute to the financing through their semester fee.
The social service provides various offers to promote the economic and social needs of the students, so u. a. in the field of psychological-psychotherapeutic advice and legal advice. It bears the costs for the transfer between the two university locations as part of courses and reimburses part of the costs for public transport. It also offers minibuses that can be rented by members of the university for university purposes.
Other facilities
Other central facilities are the center for teacher training and educational research, the computer center, the center for research funding, the canteen and cafeteria run by the Erlangen-Nürnberg student union , the language center, the sports center, the university outpatient clinic and the university archive.
On July 1, 2019, the Foundation of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt took over the sponsorship of the Jura Museum . The university is responsible for running the museum. The museum would like to integrate these into research and teaching and revise the exhibition concept.
Together with the city of Ingolstadt and the digital start-up center brigk , the KU has been operating a real-world laboratory in Ingolstadt since September 2019 . It serves as an exhibition space for experimental technologies in the field of urban air mobility .
Former institutions
Central Institute for Central and Eastern European Studies (ZIMOS)
The Central Institute for Central and Eastern European Studies, financed by third parties, was established in 1994 by the Board of Trustees of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt as a central institution. The research focused on the history of the times and ideas of the countries of the former Eastern Bloc. The focus was on the current transformation processes in business, culture and society. In June 2019, the KU Senate decided to repeal ZIMOS.
University library
A modern university library with 1,929,155 volumes is available to students and lecturers , which is divided into several locations: Central library, branch library 1 "Ulmer Hof", branch library 2 "Aula", branch library 3 "Hofgarten" / historical collections and the economic branch library Ingolstadt. insight into inventory and orders can use the library catalog OPAC be made. Duration
As of June 2014, the KU managed around 2.5 million physical units, around 3,500 current magazines and newspapers in print, as well as online access to over 75,000 electronic journals. The historical holdings department in branch library 3 "Hofgarten" manages, among other things, 6,144 manuscripts (including music manuscripts), more than 1,200 incunabula , 128 bequests, 18 association and publishing archives, a graphic collection with over 100,000 units, approx. 400,000 old prints up to 1800 , historical records as well as old maps and atlases.
At the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, significant orders of magnitude of dissolved monastery libraries were transferred to the library, which led to massive space problems until 2012 despite the renting of large storage rooms in Eichstätt (e.g. the Schäfflerhalle). In February 2007 it became known that the university library had disposed of 80 tons (approx. 100,000) of books for recycling . After a complaint, the Ingolstadt public prosecutor's office started investigations and, at the beginning of January 2008, charges were brought against Angelika Reich, the head of the university library, of infidelity in five cases. An investigation by the Bavarian State Library as the supervisory authority came to the conclusion: "The accusation of the mass destruction of valuable books from the Capuchin collection cannot be confirmed." In September 2009, the then head of the university library was acquitted.
Locations
Central Library
The central library was rebuilt from 1984 to 1987 under the direction of the architect Günter Behnisch and his office Behnisch & Partner . The building, designed as a star-shaped, low-rise steel frame construction , houses the central library as well as office and seminar rooms as well as the language laboratory and the photo laboratory. In addition, the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature and the Faculty of History and Social Sciences have their headquarters in this building. The foyer has space for exhibitions, lockers and a lounge area. The building received the BDA Bavaria Prize in 1987.
The central library includes works from the fields of history, political science, art history, classical archeology, general linguistics and literary studies, classical philology, English studies, Romance studies, German studies, Slavic studies, political science and folklore. There are also u. a. the magazine collection, the textbook section and general reference works.
Part of the library's magazine is also located in this building . Because of the space problem, a new underground storage building for another one million books was completed in 2012 at Rebdorf Abbey . In addition to holdings from abolished monastery libraries, journal volumes older than 15 years and less used holdings from all Eichstätter library locations are to be transferred to the magazine. The building has a length of 130 meters and a width of 22 meters and is equipped with a state-of-the-art, electronically controlled compact shelving system.
Branch library 1 "Ulmer Hof"
The Ulmer Hof building was built around 1625. In 1688 it was expanded into a baroque city palace by Giovanni Giacomo Engl . It served as the canon court for Karl Ferdinand and Ernst von Ulm zu Erbach. After secularization , the building was now in private hands and was acquired in 1842 by the Royal Humanistic Gymnasium (today's Willibald Gymnasium ). In 1977 the university bought the building. Between 1978 and 1980, Karljosef Schattner , Jörg Homeier and Andreas Fürsich converted the library into the theology department of the Catholic University. In 1987 the Ulmer Hof branch library was awarded the BDA Bavarian Prize.
This branch library comprises the departments of theology, philosophy and musicology.
Branch library 2 "Aula"
Between 1727 and 1738, Gabriel de Gabrieli built a new prince-bishop's court stables in Ostenstraße directly on the city wall . After this came into Bavarian state ownership in 1855, it was first used by the Royal Humanist High School from 1868. In 1903 and 1904 the building was converted into an auditorium . After it came into the possession of the university in 1981, the building was initially used temporarily as a library. As part of the renovation from 1995 to 1996, carried out by Karl Frey , it was finally divided up: Part of the building was expanded to become the “Aula” library location and a new building; a second part became the “former riding school” building, which contains lecture and seminar rooms; In addition, another part of the former building complex became the building of the Catholic University Community. The auditorium building also received a BDA Prize Bavaria (1997).
The branch library 2 houses works from the fields of geography, journalism, mathematics / computer science, natural sciences / medicine, education, psychology, sociology, sport and economics.
Branch library 3 “Hofgarten” Former state and seminar library

The building was built between 1963 and 1965 by Karljosef Schattner and Andreas Fürsich as the new location for the state and seminar library, after the summer residence became too small for the library. The historical holdings department is located in this library.
Ingolstadt economic branch library
The Ingolstadt economic science branch library was set up in the building of the former seminary of the Steyler missionaries . In 1988/1989, under the direction of Wilhelm Kücker , this seminar was converted into the main building of the newly created Faculty of Economics; part of the building is taken up by the library.
The Economics Branch Library is the only library location on the Ingolstadt campus. It includes the fields of economics and law. The European Documentation Center is also located in the second basement .

- The Finance Network Ingolstadt e. V. is an initiative of the Chair for Business Administration, Finance and Banking. The association has been organizing business events and the BVH stock exchange license since 2005 in order to be able to offer students professional training in the fields of finance and banking.
- The WFI Consulting Cup e. V. is a student organization of the economics faculty of the University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. Since 2007, the students have held an annual case study competition with the aim of bringing students together with companies from the consulting industry.
- The WFI Summer Challenge e. V. is a student organization of the economics faculty of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. She has been organizing the WFI Summer Challenge recruiting event of the same name since 2002.
