European Documentation Center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Documentation Centers ( EDZ ) are EU libraries, archives and information centers rolled into one. As a contact for science and the region, these institutions research, advise and inform on all subject areas of the European Union (EU). They ensure that the EU's documents and publications are accessible for research and teaching, but also for the interested public.

History and organization

The first European Documentation Centers (EDZ) were set up in 1963, mainly at scientific institutions that were able to demonstrate the focus on "European integration" in teaching and research. The foundation of the EDZ is based on an agreement between the European Commission and the EDZ sponsors.

The European Documentation Centers are networked: They belong to the Europe Direct information network and work closely with the European institutions as well as with EU-related specialist networks and advice centers (regional, national and international).

There are currently around 350 European Documentation Centers operating in the member states of the European Union , including 31 in Germany. They are mainly affiliated with universities, university libraries and scientific institutions.

tasks

The European Documentation Centers are advice, research and service points for literature, official documents and electronic media from and about the EU. They collect and develop these resources as special libraries on site and maintain their own projects for archiving electronic documents (e.g. ArchiDok). They help with the search for literature on European topics, advise on handling the electronic information offered by EU institutions and promote information literacy through targeted training courses and workshops. With their service, they support teachers, researchers and students as well as everyone who is interested in EU topics with the aim of making the European integration process transparent and present on site. EDZ also help prepare and hold events on European topics and provide contacts to regional, national and international bodies with an EU connection.

European Union databases

European Documentation Centers offer access and advice on handling EU databases, such as B .:
