Josef Kurzinger

Josef or Joseph Shorter (born February 20, 1898 in Oberölsbach in the Upper Palatinate; † February 1, 1984 in Ingolstadt ) was a Roman Catholic priest and professor for the New Testament at the Episcopal Philosophical-Theological University of Eichstätt .

Life

Kurzinger was ordained a priest on June 29, 1923 and initially worked as a chaplain in Spalt . Just two years later, he was given leave of absence to continue studying at the University of Munich, where he completed his doctorate in 1928. He then worked as a cathedral preacher in Eichstätt from 1928 to 1930 . From 1930 on he was initially associate professor, from 1935 full professor for New Testament exegesis , history of exegesis and homiletics at the Philosophical-Theological University of Eichstätt. From 1935 to 1936, he also read Dogmatics and Old Testament Science from 1938 on a temporary basis. In November 1933 he signed the German professors' confession of Adolf Hitler .

From 1935 to 1945, Kurzinger was also a part-time pastor.

In 1949 he went on a three month study tour to the United States to improve teacher training at the seminary .

In 1957 he finished his lectures in homiletics. From 1958 to 1960 he was rector of the university. In 1969 he retired.

He was allowed to use the ecclesiastical title of prelate . Since 1926 he was a member of the Catholic student association KDStV Aenania Munich .

Bible translator

Within the real Bible, The Holy Scriptures in German translation , Kurzinger translated and edited the Acts of the Apostles and the letters of the New Testament .

He also revised the translation by Joseph Franz von Allioli in 1954 by adapting it to the Greek text. This complete translation was included in the so-called Pattloch Bible of 1956.

In 1980 the Pattloch-Verlag published the edition The New Testament - easy to read .

Aftermath

On July 15, 1963, Kurzinger was made an honorary citizen of the old community of Oberölsbach. In this place there is also a Prälat-Kurzinger-Straße named after him .
