Richard Schenk

Richard Schenk OP (born June 27, 1951 in Los Angeles County ) is an American religious and theologian . From 2011 to 2014 he was President of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt (KU) .

Life

Richard Schenk, grandson of German emigrants, studied philosophy at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 1969 to 1971 . In 1971 he joined the Congregation of the Dominicans in Oakland at. In 1974 he graduated from the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT) with a Baccalaureus artium and in 1978 with a Masters in Philosophy . In 1978 he was ordained a priest . From 1982 to 1985 he was a research assistant with Leo Scheffczyk at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1986 he got a jobThe grace of perfect finitude. On the transcendental theological interpretation of Thomanian anthropology in the subject Systematic Theology via the Theological Anthropology of Thomas Aquinas and a comparison with the works of Martin Heidegger and Karl Rahner in Munich for Dr. theol. PhD. From 1986 to 1991 he was a research assistant at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and was involved in the commission for the publication of unprinted texts from the medieval world of the mind. From 1989 to 1991 he held a visiting professorship at the Swiss University of Friborg .

In 1990 Schenk was appointed professor at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (DSPT) in Berkeley. From 1991 to 2000 he was director of the Hannover Institute of Philosophical Research and in 1991 founder of the Department of Philosophy and Theology. In 1992 he became a member of the Core Doctoral Faculty of the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley, California. Since then he has taught at both faculties. From 2003 to 2005 he was also director of the Intercultural Forum for Studies in Faith and Culture (ICF) (The Pope John Paul II Cultural Center) in Washington, DC From 1999 to 2003 and from 2007 to 2011 Schenk Regens was his order's studiorum ( Western Dominican Province ). He is involved in numerous functions and offices at universities and the Catholic Church in the USA and Germany.

Richard Schenk was a candidate for the presidency of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt alongside Andreas Lob-Hüdepohl in 2011 and was elected President of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt on May 26, 2011 by the University Council. The new president is appointed by the chairman of the university's board of trustees, Archbishop Reinhard Cardinal Marx of Munich . Schenk took office on October 1, 2011 and was officially introduced on November 10, 2011. On February 24, 2014, he surprisingly announced his resignation "for health reasons".

In 2018 Schenk was appointed honorary professor at the University of Freiburg in the department of Christian Philosophy of Religion.
