Günter Altner
Günter Altner (born September 20, 1936 in Breslau ; † December 6, 2011 ) was a German biologist and Protestant theologian .
Life
Altner was the son of a chemist and grew up in Opladen from the age of one to graduation . His older brother is the biologist and former Regensburg university rector Helmut Altner (* 1934), his younger brother is a landscape architect . Günter Altner studied Protestant theology and biology in Wuppertal, Göttingen, Mainz and Gießen.
Since 1961 active in the academy work of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland , from 1968 to 1971 he was head of studies for border issues in the field of theology and natural sciences at the Evangelical Academy in Mülheim an der Ruhr . In 1971, Günter Altner was appointed full professor of human biology at the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education , but already in 1973 he switched to the research institute of the Evangelical Study Group (FEST) in Heidelberg . From 1977 until his retirement in 1999 Altner was professor for Protestant theology with a focus on systematic theology and social ethics at the University of Koblenz-Landau . From 1979 to 1982 he was a member of the Enquete Commission for Future Energy Policy of the German Bundestag, from 1999 to 2002 a member of the ethics advisory board at the Federal Ministry of Health. Altner, who was one of the co-founders of the Freiburg Öko-Institut in 1977 , was critical of genetic engineering and in 1987 demanded that it no longer be promoted with public funds. Altner also called for a ban on the release of genetically modified organisms and a total ban on biological weapons at international level. Altner last lived in Berlin .
