Helmut Altner (biologist)

Helmut Altner (born July 27, 1934 in Breslau ) is a German biologist , professor emeritus for zoology , science manager and former university rector .

Life

Altner, son of a chemist, grew up in Opladen . He had two brothers. Günter Altner was also a biologist and a theologian , his younger brother is a landscape architect . After graduating from high school in 1954, Altner studied biology , chemistry and geography at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU) , funded by the German National Academic Foundation (SddV ). In 1959 he passed the state examination there and earned his doctorate in zoology in 1961 with a thesis on the olfactory sense of amphibians. He was a student of Hansjochem Autrum .

In 1962 he was a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt am Main . From 1963 to 1968 he was an assistant at the Zoological Institute of the LMU. In 1967 he completed his habilitation in zoology. In 1968 he was appointed to the newly created chair for zoology at the University of Regensburg .

From 1976 to 1979 Altner was President of the Association of German Biologists and Bioscientific Societies (vdbiol). Since 1980 he has been a member of the Science Council and works as a science manager specializing in the functional morphology of sensory organs, thermal and hygroreception. In 1989 he was offered the management of the Helmholtz Center in Munich and decided to take the position of rector of the University of Regensburg, which he headed for around twelve years.

From 1993 to 2003 he was President of the German National Academic Foundation. In 1994 he founded the “Pro Arte” university foundation to promote the fine arts at the University of Regensburg. He was inspired by the Regensburg real estate entrepreneur and university foundation founder Johann Vielberth . In 2002 he was one of the four founding fathers of the Bavarian Elite Network . He gave up the chair in 2014. In 2004 he was a founding member of the foundation “The best minds for the University of Regensburg”. In 2006, Minister of State Thomas Goppel appointed him to the newly established Advisory Board for the Bavarian Elite Promotion Act ( BayEFG ) for three years .

Altner has been married to Iris Altner, who holds a doctorate in biology, since 1971. Both are patrons of the Five Continents Museum .
