The Technical University of Nuremberg ( TUN for short ) is a technical university in Nuremberg , Bavaria, which has been under construction since 2018 . From 2021, the new university will gradually start research and teaching.

background

The start-up is part of an education investment package by the Bavarian state government for the greater Nuremberg area. Investments of 1.5 billion euros in the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and 300 million euros in the Technical University of Nuremberg are also planned.

Wolfgang A. Herrmann , former President of the Technical University of Munich (TUM), is the head of the structure commission for the establishment of the university . He is supported by, among others, Gerhard Casper , who was President of Stanford University in California from 1992 to 2000 and President of the American Academy in Berlin since July 2015 .

According to the Bavarian state government , 1.2 billion euros are currently earmarked for the development of the TUN. The Science Council approved the concept in January 2020 but also voiced criticism.

location

In the south of Nuremberg, in the statistical district  4 Südliche Außenstadt , in the statistical district 41 marshalling yard , the 37.5 hectare university campus is to be built. This is to become part of the new Lichtenreuth district . The area planned for TUN is on Brunecker Strasse, in the area of the old reloading halls of the disused Nuremberg Süd freight yard , between the railway repair shop and Münchener Strasse. In the past 20 years, the area has essentially only been used as a large car park and scrap yard.

Study concept

With its interdisciplinary approach between technical, natural, social and human sciences, the new Technical University of Nuremberg is to have a "nationwide model character" and develop "a completely new university way of thinking".

A breakdown into traditional faculties is not planned, instead the focus is on research departments with an interdisciplinary character in the areas of: Mechatronic Engineering, Quantum Engineering, Biological Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

A volume of approx. 200 to 240 professors, approx. 1800 to 2000 employees and approx. 5000 to 6000 students is planned in order to ensure a supervisory relationship between one professor and 25 students. Teaching and research should be internationally oriented; Lectures should mainly be given in English.

criticism

Double offers in the region

Criticism comes from the opposition parties in the Bavarian state parliament .

Double offers are created here, the meaning of which is not accessible to me. We saw neither a needs nor a feasibility study for the planned new university. "( Isabell Zacharias , university policy spokeswoman for the Bavarian SPD parliamentary group)

The T echnical H ochschule N ürnberg ( THN ) counts with around 13,000 students already among the twenty largest colleges in Germany. With around 40,000 students, the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) is the tenth largest university in Germany, with an important technical faculty (TechFak) and an interdisciplinary cluster of excellence in the fields of mathematics, science and technology.

In the FAU 1.5 billion euros are to be invested, in the THN 300 million euros and now in the TUN also 1.2 billion euros, so a total of 3 billion euros in the region for universities.

"State politics can be so beautiful: A beaming Markus Söder, who pours out the free state's cornucopia over the region [...] The cat complaint that followed in Erlangen - the FAU feared, not unjustifiably, unpleasant competition for its most important faculty (TechFak) - is thanks to friendly financial injections from the Free State it has long since fallen silent. Only behind the scenes is there a few strong scolding [...] No wonder that FAU President Prof. Joachim Hornegger no longer has any problems with the competitor. Whether he is really looking forward to the competition, as he emphasized, remains to be seen. "

Demolition of the transfer halls

"City approved vandalism" , reloading halls demolished in 2018

The old reloading halls at the Südbahnhof were demolished instead of being integrated into the Technical University as suggested by Station F in Paris . The cityscape initiative Nuremberg raised the most serious allegations, u. a. of "vandalism".
