Episcopal coat of arms

Coat of arms of Karl Braun as bishop of Eichstätt

The coat of arms of the bishop divided three times shows in field 1 a golden rod on a red background the coat of arms of the diocese of Eichstätt. Field 2 shows the ninefold chess, taken from the coat of arms of the Roman Giel von Gielsberg , prince abbot of Kempten (1639–1673), the builder of the new monastery and parish church St. Lorenz in Kempten, the baptismal church of Karl Braun. Here he was also confirmed and celebrated his first birthday. Five red and four white fields, each with a nail on three white fields. The red fields symbolize the five wounds of Christ , the white the cross with the nails. Field 3 shows a blue wavy bar on a silver background, which on the one hand stands for the water of baptism, but also represents a reference to Wessobrunn and Wemding , the Marian shrines in the diocese of Augsburg and Eichstätt.

Coat of arms of Archbishop Karl Braun of Bamberg

His motto Videbunt in quem transfixerunt ("You will look at the one you have pierced") ( Joh 19,37  EU ) from the Good Friday Passion, the day of the appointment as Bishop of Eichstätt by Pope John Paul II.

The Archbishop's coat of arms, divided four times, shows in fields 1 and 4 a black lion on a golden background, the "Bamberg Lion" from the Staufer era. A silver diagonal thread is added as a "motto", as the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Bamberg. Fields 2 and 3 show the ninefold chess, taken from the coat of arms of the Kempten prince abbot Giel von Gielsberg (see above). As a symbol of Mary, a blue star is placed on the heart of the coat of arms. The nails, however, now establish a link to Bamberg Cathedral, whose nail relic, which was probably given by Emperor Heinrich, is still highly admired today; In the mass text for the Bamberg nail festival, the words of the motto are repeated.

The pallium and the two-beam lecture cross are the rank symbols of a ruling metropolitan of a church province , the green prelate hat with 20 tassels is the heraldic symbol for all archbishops.

Testimonies

“As Bishop of Eichstätt from 1984 to 1995 and as Archbishop of Bamberg from 1995 to 2001, he was a loyal shepherd and brother to the faithful, an example of strength of faith and a messenger of Catholic teaching. He combines an unwavering firmness of principle with a sincere willingness to talk in ecumenical dialogue and in contact with the congregation. He has always been about togetherness in the church and overcoming separation - also with a view to the sometimes postulated church from below in erroneous contrast to the official church . He teaches the unity of the Catholic Church and trust in the cooperation of all believers in prayer. "(Dec. 2010)
“More than 17 years of his life were determined by episcopal activity [...] the promotion of science was always a particular concern of his. For example, the spirit and program of the Catholic University of Eichstätt were shaped by him. When I think of his time as Archbishop of Bamberg, I am mainly reminded of the Bamberg Pastoral Discussion, which he led and promoted in an impressive way. "(Dec. 2010)
