Live and act

Origin and career

Von Leonrod came from the baronial von Leonrod family and was the son of the Ansbach appellate court president Ludwig von Leonrod (1774-1859) and his wife Rosina, nee. Freiin von Stengel (1786–1862), granddaughter of the Bavarian financial expert Stephan von Stengel , who is said to have been a son of Elector Karl Theodor .

Leonrod attended the Humanist Gymnasium (today Willibald Gymnasium ) in Eichstätt and then the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe . In the turmoil of the Roman revolution, he broke off there in 1848 and continued his studies in canon law at the University of Eichstätt . In 1851 he was ordained a priest .

Through various ecclesiastical offices in southern Bavaria - for example, cathedral vicar and cathedral preacher in Eichstätt in 1856 , pastor in St. Zeno near Bad Reichenhall in 1858 - Franz Leopold von Leonrod was appointed 74th March 1867 by the then Apostolic Nuncio in Germany, Pier Francesco Meglia . Bishop of Eichstätt consecrated and enthroned .

Bishop of Eichstätt

His time as bishop was shaped by the contents of the First Vatican Council . He was convinced of the infallibility of the Pope and, unlike many colleagues who had previously left, took part in the final vote of the council on July 18, 1870. With the council, a cultural war broke out, which also led to the secession of the Old Catholics . Bavaria remained largely unaffected by this. Franz Leopold was committed to accepting students from dioceses in which open disputes had broken out. Franz Leopold was also anxious to take care of his diocese: he brought the Bavarian Bishops' Conference to Eichstätt four times and also tried to organize an all-German conference, which however did not succeed. He personally visited all parishes in the diocese four times. In 1882/83 he brought out a small and a medium catechism for the diocese of Eichstätt, which was also a model for neighboring dioceses. His name also stands for extensive restoration work on Eichstätt Cathedral .

In 1895 Franz Leopold became an honorary member of the Catholic student association Academia in KV , with which he remained associated until his death. His golden jubilee as a priest was celebrated in 1901 together with the foundation festival of the association. On the occasion of his 25th jubilee as a priest, an altar was donated, which initially stood in the cathedral at Eichstätt, but is now in the Church of the Assumption in Pappenheim , the construction of which Franz Leopold von Leonrod had promoted.

The Leonrodplatz in Eichstätt was named after him.

Family environment

The bishop's brothers were Karl von Leonrod (1817–1905), Bavarian lieutenant general and personal friend of Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria , as well as Leopold von Leonrod (1829–1905), Bavarian Minister of Justice and August von Leonrod (1819–1904), general of the cavalry , his wife Sybilla von Leonrod geb. Meilhaus acted as the educator of King Ludwig II .
