Manfred Weitlauff

Manfred Weitlauff (born July 31, 1936 in Augsburg ) is a German Catholic theologian . From 1980 to 2001 he was Professor of Church History at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and since 1981 in the same capacity at the Lucerne Theological Faculty .

Life

Manfred Weitlauff attended the Realgymnasium in Augsburg , where he passed his Abitur in 1957 . In the same year he began studying philosophy and theology at Munich University. After completing his studies, he was ordained a priest in July 1963 (diocese, Augsburg) and worked as a chaplain in Dillingen an der Donau and Weilheim in Upper Bavaria . In the autumn of 1965, Weitlauff began to study for a doctorate at the University of Munich and at the same time supervised the Entraching parish near Finning , an office that he held until 1981. As early as May 1967 he became a research assistant at the Chair for Bavarian Church History and in 1972 at the Chair for Church History of the Middle Ages and Modern Times at the University of Munich.

At the beginning of February 1970 he received his doctorate as Dr. theol. with the dissertation Cardinal Johann Theodor von Bayern (1703–1763), Prince-Bishop of Regensburg, Freising and Liège. A bishop's life in the shadow of the Bavarian imperial church policy. It was published in the same year as part of the series Contributions to the History of the Diocese of Regensburg . In February 1977 he qualified as a professor for church history with the habilitation thesis Die Reichskirchenpolitik des Haus Bayern under Elector Max Emanuel (1679–1726). From Max Emanuel's inauguration to the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession (1679−1701).

1977 university lecturer, in September 1980 professor for church history (C2) at the Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität München (at the same time with teaching assignments at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken), eight months later he accepted the call as full professor for church history at the theological faculty in Lucerne , but also held regular lectures at the theological faculty of the University of Basel . Since September 1986 Weitlauff has been a full professor of Bavarian church history at the University of Munich, succeeding Benno Hubensteiner . In April 1993 he was appointed full professor to the chair for church history of the Middle Ages and modern times at Munich University. His predecessor was Georg Schwaiger , for whom he published a festschrift for his 65th birthday in 1990 . In 1995 (until 1997) he was elected Dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty in Munich and was also a member of the University's Senate from 1998 to 2000 . He has been retired since October 2001 . Weitlauff was (from 1980 to 2017) co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Kirchengeschichte (and at times its editor-in-chief), the Munich Church History Studies and the History Department of Munich Theological Studies. As an author, he writes for the Historical Lexicon of Bavaria , the Neue Deutsche Biographie and the Theologische Realenzyklopädie , the Lexicon for Theology and Church , Religion in Past and Present and as a reviewer for the Zeitschrift für Kirchengeschichte, the Rottenburger Jahrbuch für Kirchengeschichte, the Munich Theological Journal, etc. He has been a full member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1991 , of the Philosophical-Historical Class of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 2000, of the Swabian Research Foundation since 2003 and extraordinary member of the Historical Section of the Bavarian Benedictine Academy since 2004 .

From 1989 to 2008 Weitlauff was first chairman of the Joseph Bernhart Society and editor of numerous works by Joseph Bernhart . On December 6, 2003 he was elected as the successor to Eugen Kleindienst as first chairman of the Association for the History of the Augsburg Diocese and held the honorary office until December 3, 2011. His successor was his pupil diocese historian, Cathedral Chapter Thomas Groll.

Honors

For his services, Manfred Weitlauff was appointed papal honorary prelate in June 2001 . In July 2009 he received the Bavarian Order of Merit .
