Pier Francesco Meglia (born November 3, 1810 in Santo Stefano al Mare , † March 31, 1883 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal .

Life

Meglia's parents Stefano and Maria Caterina Garibaldi belonged to the upper middle class in Santo Stefano. He received his training in the seminaries in Genoa and Savona and was ordained a priest on September 24, 1836. In 1843 he received his doctorate in both rights at La Sapienza University . His award opened the doors for a career in the diplomatic service and he was initially secretary of the papal nunciature in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies . After the annexation of the Papal States to Italy, he was sent to France as auditor of the nunciature and was most recently the main commissioner. He had to talk to the Emperor of the French , Napoleon III on difficult questions . , negotiate.

When he returned to Rome, he was on September 22, 1864 by Pope Pius IX. consecrated titular bishop of Damascus . He was then sent to Mexico as a nuncio and received by Maximilian I in the same year . However, his life was in danger and had to flee via Nicaragua and Guatemala . In 1866 he became nuncio in Bavaria. In 1874 he was sent back to Paris as a nuncio . At the instruction of Pius IX. he crowned the statue of the Madonna of Lourdes , the so-called "Vergine Incoronata" (1877) In the consistory of September 19, 1879 he was by Pope Leo XIII. accepted into the college of cardinals . He received the titular church Santi Silvestro e Martino ai Monti .

Cardinal Meglia died in March 1883 at the age of 72.

Honors

From Napoleon III. he was appointed officer of the Legion of Honor .
