Matteo Eustachio Gonella (born September 20, 1811 in Turin , † April 15, 1870 in Rome ) was Curia Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

After the confirmation on 22 May 1820, the son studied by Andrea Gonella theology in Turin and at the Sapienza in Rome, where he on December 20, 1841 utroque iure doctorate and doctorate in civil and canon law earned. Gonella's ordination took place in Saluzzo on February 18, 1838. He was Apostolic Delegate in the province of Orvieto from 1846 to 1847 and in the province of Viterbo from 1847 to 1848. From June 13, 1850 to October 1, 1861 he was Apostolic Nuncio in Belgium with his seat in Brussels . From October 1, 1861 to June 22, 1866 he was Apostolic Nuncio in Munich and resided at Ludwigstrasse 29/1. On June 22nd, 1866 he was appointed Bishop of Viterbo and Toscanella with the personal title of Archbishop .

Pope Pius IX took him on March 13, 1868 as a cardinal priest in the college of cardinals and three days later transferred the titular church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva to him . From 1869 to 1870 he was a participant in the First Vatican Council .

His body was laid out in Sant'Agostino and buried in Viterbo Cathedral.
