Uihlein wallpaper house
The Uihlein Tapetenhaus in Hanover was a specialist trade in wallpaper and linoleum with its own factory in Linden . The location of the preserved office building in the Mitte district is Andreaestrasse 1 .
history
The company was founded in Hanover in 1895 by Heinrich Uihlein (born February 23, 1870 in Kassel; † August 27, 1923 in Hanover), although there was already long-standing competition in the city and its suburbs from the start. The first place of business was what was then Leinstraße 25, at the corner of Grupenstraße (today: Karmarschstraße).
In 1901 Uihlein bought the building at Andreaestrasse 1 and expanded it into a five-story commercial building, which was modern at the time, in which he sold wallpaper, linoleum and related items. At the same time he began his own production of high-quality wallpapers with velor - and silk , with "light effect hand printing" collections and Selaptica wallpapers, which he sold nationally and internationally in the factory in Linden .
The trend-setting brands were awarded prizes at numerous exhibitions at the beginning of the 20th century.
- 1904: Gold medal at the World Exhibition in St. Louis
- 1905: Honorary award and gold medal at the trade exhibition in Hanover
- 1905: Grand Prix at the Colonial Exhibition in London
- 1905: Gold, silver and bronze medals at the world exhibition in Liège .
In 1910 Heinrich Uihlein built an office building in Bahnhofstrasse, the so-called "Handelshof". The Handelshof was considered one of the most beautiful buildings in the city and architecturally struck a link with the wallpaper house. The office building in Andreaestrasse was expanded by purchasing the neighboring house at Grosse Packhofstrasse 29. The company was later expanded to include a warehouse in Hagenstrasse .
In 1910 his brother Ferdinand Uihlein (born March 20, 1875 in Kassel; † July 27, 1956 in Hanover) joined the company as a partner and became the sole owner in the middle of the First World War in 1916 after the company founder withdrew to Bad Harzburg due to illness .
At the beginning of the Second World War in 1939, the company still had 48 employees . During the night of October 8th to 9th, 1943, the air raids on Hanover completely destroyed the wallpaper house and on March 25th 1945 the warehouse.
The reconstruction in Andreae road began in September 1949, March 1950, the office building was the monumental owl as a logo erected on the roof are.
Despite a successful repositioning on the market, the company was closed in 1981 because the third generation of the family had changed their careers.
Today the 1950 building serves various purposes but is still family owned.
