Alois Brems was born in 1906 as the youngest of 15 children on the Ziegelhof near Eichstätt. After graduating from the humanistic grammar school in Eichstätt, he studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Eichstätter University . On June 29, 1930, like two of his brothers a few years earlier, he received the sacrament of ordination . He then worked as a chaplain in Breitenbrunn in Upper Palatinate and in Schwabach . From 1932 to 1935 he took a doctoral degree at the Pontifical Gregorian University , at the end of which he obtained a doctorate in theology with a thesis on the interpretation and further development of the ecclesiastical code. He then worked for a year as the secretary of the exchange responsible for handling correspondence between Rome and all German dioceses. On April 1, 1937, Brems became the first youth pastor in the Eichstätt diocese. Together with Ottilie Moßhamer, he published the three-volume work Wort an die Jugend , which for a long time became the standard work for church youth work . He headed the Episcopal Youth Office of the Diocese of Eichstätt until 1950 and then became head of the newly created office for pastoral care for men and women. On his initiative, a wide range of adult education was created in Hirschberg Castle . In 1953, Brems was elected Cathedral Chapter . In 1966 he appointed Bishop Joseph Schröffer the Vicar General .

When Bishop Schröffer was appointed secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome and therefore resigned from the office of bishop in Eichstätt, Alois Brems was initially appointed acting head of the diocese. On May 28, 1968, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the bishop of Eichstätt. He was ordained bishop on July 6, 1968 by the later Cardinal Joseph Schröffer ; Co- consecrators were Rudolf Graber , the Bishop of Regensburg , and Friedrich Wetter , the Bishop of Speyer . His motto was: "In the midst of his own, like one who serves". During his term of office, the reconstruction and renovation of the Eichstätt Cathedral fell from 1971 to 1975. When the Theological University of Eichstätt was elevated to a Catholic University in 1980 , this was also a major achievement for Brems, who as a bishop took care of its expansion and promotion had tried.

In 1983, Brems's resignation was accepted by Rome and he was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Eichstätt. One year later, Karl Braun was appointed Bishop of Eichstätt by Pope John Paul II .

Alois Brems died on February 16, 1987 at the age of 80. His grave is in Eichstätt Cathedral.
